Historic Moment of Unity through Pulpit Exchange between HKSKH and The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong

Bishop Matthias Der presented gifts to Cardinal Chow

In an effort to promote the spirit of common witness and church unity between the Anglican and Catholic communities, the International Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM) is facilitating a series of Pulpit Exchanges this year. On 1st June at 9am, Cardinal Stephen Chow(周守仁樞機)of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong was invited to preach during the Sunday service at HKSKH St John’s Cathedral. This marks the first time a Catholic Cardinal has preached at a Sunday service in St John’s Cathedral, and Cardinal Chow expressed that it is indeed a historic moment for him as a Roman Catholic Cardinal to share a message in the Anglican cathedral.

The service was presided over by Bishop Matthias Der of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island. At the conclusion of the service, Bishop Matthias Der presented two commemorative gifts to Cardinal Chow: one was a book published by the cathedral titled “2025 Lenten Reflections: A Transformative Journey on the Theme of Hospitality and Welcome” and the other was a stained glass depiction of the Lamb of God from the cathedral''s east wall.

Both Bishop Matthias Der and Cardinal Chow serve as co-chairs of IARCCUM. The next Pulpit Exchange will take place on 27 July, where Bishop Matthias Der will preach at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Meanwhile, on 11 June , the Revd Dominic Chan(陳志明神父), the Parish Priest of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, led 25 parishioners on a visit to HKSKH St. Paul''s Church. They engaged in mutual sharing and fellowship with the Vicar, the Revd Canon Dr. Lam Chun-Wai, the Revd Dr. Ng Yu-Lam, the Revd Adam Mo, and the parishioners of St. Paul’s Church. Following this, the group visited the Bishop House, where they were personally received by The Most Revd Andrew Chan, Archbishop and Primate of HKSKH. This visit provided the Catholic friends with a deeper understanding of the Anglican Church and fostered hopes for more opportunities for unity and service to the community in the future.
