he Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has gazetted to remove any group gathering during a religious activity from “Schedule 1: Exempted Group Gatherings” of the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Group Gathering) Regulation (Chapter 599G, the Laws of Hong Kong) and to include religious premises in “Schedule 2: Scheduled Premises” of the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Chapter 599F, the Laws of Hong Kong); at the same time, the Secretary for Food and Health has directed that all scheduled premises suspend operation from the 10th to the 23rd instant (both dates inclusive). In response to the Government’s promulgation, the House of Bishops has announced the arrangements applicable to churches situate in Hong Kong as below:

1. With effect from the 10th instant, all churches should close temporarily, i.e, admitting no members of the public for worship service or private prayer.

2. Since funerals are still considered exempted gatherings, churches can still conduct funeral services as usual.

3. Only a minimal number of the clergy and paid staff should participate in the making of a live or recorded broadcast of a church’s worship service.

The above arrangements shall remain effective until further notice. Clergy having any query regarding the above matters should approach their respective diocesan bishops.

By order of the House of Bishops
